Honolulu, Hawaii – Kapolei Charter School (KCS) by Goodwill Hawaii is now accepting applications for the 2017-18 school year to fill 100 spots open for its inaugural 9th grade class. The tuition free public charter school, which received approval to open from the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission last August, will provide an alternative educational option for students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. The curriculum will focus on college and career readiness to prepare students for success after high school.
“We’re excited to begin connecting with families in West Oahu who have been looking for a first-class educational alternative for their children,” said Wanda Villareal, school director of Kapolei Charter School (KCS). “Our goal is to help students of all backgrounds succeed in school and life.”
Students enrolled at KCS will be assigned an academic life coach who will help them to establish and follow a personalized education plan that meets their individual needs and goals. The life coach will also help students navigate and overcome any challenges to ensure their academic success.
Beyond taking the traditional academic courses required to receive a Board of Education high school diploma, students will have the opportunity to participate in career exploration programs to identify and plan for a long-term profession and future. Earning ready-to-use industrial certifications and/or college education credits is also part of the curriculum.
Interested families are invited to attend an Open House at KCS to meet the school director, tour the campus and learn more about the curriculum. Scheduled Open House dates are: March 16, 5-7 pm; April 13, 5-7 pm; and April 15, 9-11 am.
KCS applications are available online at www.kcshawaii.org or at the school campus located at Goodwill Hawaii’s Ohana Career and Learning Center at 2140 Lauwiliwili Street in Kapolei. Applications must be delivered to the school by April 21, 2017 in order to be included in the lottery to fill the 100 openings. The first day of instruction is set for August 7.
